Serena Confalonieri interviewed by Nodus

Nodus collaborates with the world’s most famous designers. These creatives are famous for their style and the continuous innovation they bring with their ideas. One of these artists is Serena Confalonieri. We interviewed her. Let’s get to know her better and find out what her ideas on design are and what she envisages  for the future.

How would you define the essence or primary characteristics of your work? Every designer has their own style, their own distinctive features… what are yours?
To sum it up in four words: graphic, decorative, synthetic, emotional.

What are the people or stories that have influenced you most in your career?
Among the people I have worked with over the years, working with Aldo Cibic and Diego Grandi have certainly influenced me a lot. The experiences abroad have been another very important moment in my path: Barcelona, Berlin and above all the experience in New York. They gave me the opportunity to get to know different people and cultures and to open up to a wider way of working and thinking.

How does the cultural aspect linked to your country and its traditions enter into your projects?
I often work on projects that aim to recover the historical, craft and cultural heritage of particular areas and techniques. The study of the system of traditions and production methods linked to the past and their subsequent revitalisation is always at the basis of these projects: maintaining the roots and preserving tradition through the encounter with contemporary forms and functions.

How do you see the future and what do you think will be the new trends in design?
I am increasingly noticing a rapprochement with craftsmanship, less massive sales logics, and a less consumerist use.

What do you think about sustainability today? Do you think it is a basic element of design or an added value?
I believe that sustainability should now be a basic element of design. However, in order for a product to be truly sustainable, it would be necessary to start with a revolution in materials and production facilities, activities that require time and investment. So I think there is still a long way to go.

How much does the social aspect count and how often is it present in your projects?
I have just recently been developing a cooperation project with the Municipality of Milan with a strong social imprint, and I hope there will be further opportunities in the future!

Is design more emotion, more rationality/functionality, or is there no prevalence of one of the two aspects?
I don’t think you can do without functionality in design. The challenge is to add emotion without making the design “too dirty”.

What do you think about the role of textiles in design?
I have always worked a lot with the world of textiles, it is a type of product I feel particularly at ease with because it can be used to dress shapes and spaces, transforming them completely. In recent years it has been regaining an increasingly central role, thanks to a renewed interest in a more decorative style.

Finally, an aphorism or a phrase that represents you.
“Inspiration exists, but it must find you already at work”, Pablo Picasso.
