Custom-made stair carpets: how to make the right choice according to the room?

In multi-storey houses, stairs are a central element of the home. Furnishing them with a custom-made carpet not only makes them safer to use, but also has a beneficial effect on the overall look and feel of the room.

How can we design custom-made stair carpets that make the most of this element? This is the question we will answer in this article.

What are the benefits of a custom-made stair carpet?

Placing a carpet on the stairs is a good idea from both a practical and a decorative point of view. A high quality carpet performs several functions at the same time: on the one hand, it gives stability to the walk, reducing the risk of slips and falls, it also protects the floor. On the other hand, with its texture and colours, it furnishes the space and makes it the star of the scene.

Together with the corridors, the stairs in the home are one of the places where most traffic is concentrated. Especially in homes where the stairs connect the living and sleeping areas, all family members find themselves walking up and down the stairs several times a day. Consequently, choosing a luxury carpet with a solid and durable structure is essential to avoid wear and tear on the floor.

Traffic on the stairs can have a more or less noticeable effect on the covering of the steps, with wooden floors being the most likely to show signs of passing. On the other hand, luxury carpets can also best protect stairs made of ceramic or natural stone.

A good tailor-made design makes it possible to create staircase carpets that can enhance the environment and, at the same time, enhance the characteristics of the space. Ideally, the combination of the structure of the staircase and the look of the luxury carpet should make the atmosphere cosy and balanced.

The best materials and processing techniques for stair carpets

Stair carpets should have a compact and durable structure, for at least two reasons. Firstly, because the compactness of the fibres makes the carpet more stable and prevents dangerous movements. Secondly, a compact structure makes the luxury carpet easier to clean and reduces the amount of dust and allergens that can settle between the fibres.

For staircase carpets, thin fibres and hand-knotted or woven patterns are therefore preferred. With the help of interior decorators and designers of fine carpets, it is easy to find the best material for your home, also taking into account the style of the room and the objective you want to achieve.

The most commonly used material is wool, which is appreciated for its versatility and the many qualities that make it possible to obtain carpets that are both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional. In homes furnished in a contemporary style, you could also consider custom-made carpets in cotton, a material that is just as versatile and sustainable as wool and particularly suitable for stairways.

Ideal sizes, colours and patterns for luxury stair carpets

The choice of size for a high quality carpet is one of the most important. The size of the rug should be studied by considering how the staircase will develop. The shape of the carpet will necessarily be different for a linear staircase or a spiral staircase. The surface area of the staircase to be covered is also important.

You can decide to cover the stairs completely with the carpet or to leave a portion of the steps free at the sides. The first solution can be useful if you are renovating an old country house and want to cover the original floor of the house. Luxury carpets that are less wide than the steps are preferable if you want to give the room a lighter look. And if you want to create a balance between the floor and the luxury carpet.

When choosing colours, the way the staircase fits into the room and other carpets that may be visible from the stairs must be taken into account. The most common solutions include the use of rather simple geometric patterns and the use of bright or dark colours. Particularly in the case of heavily trafficked staircases, carpets in light colours and neutral tones should be avoided, as they risk bringing out dirt and stains. Luxury carpets with a timeless look, such as carpets made of colourful stripes of various thicknesses or zigzag lines, are a good idea.

When it comes to the colours of made-to-measure stair carpets, you can take inspiration from the shades chosen for wallpaper or wall paint. Alternatively, you can opt for colours that stand out against the white of the walls.
