Rug art: how to choose the ideal art carpet for your interior design?

For several centuries, rug art has made it possible to create home or commercial environments with a unique personality, which are harmonious and in which the different elements enhance each other.

By being able to choose a made-to-measure carpet  for your space and also being able to customise the artefact in terms of its size and design, you can certainly express all your creativity, so that each place becomes a faithful reflection of your own style and taste.

What do you need to know about the rug art?

The rug art has its roots in ancient times. The earliest historical records date the origin of carpets to around 500 BC. While the earliest textile artefacts had a purely practical function and served to protect the nomadic Siberian tribes from the cold and to insulate them, as time went by, the processing techniques and the artistic taste of the people became more refined. As a result, the artefacts have become true handmade works of art.

Some of the most beautiful examples are the Persian carpets from the Safavid era, which are characterised by very elaborate and precious designs. In fact, it was mainly the inhabitants of Persia and Turkey who specialised in the rug art.

Originally, nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes were responsible for the manufacture of the artefacts and, in particular, the task of designing and creating the various pieces was entrusted to women. As populations became settled, weaving work was entrusted to specialised artisans and schools sprang up in the main cities of the Middle East.

As trade routes spread, the rug art then spread throughout the world, influencing the textile traditions of different cultures, from India to the Caucasus, from Central Asia to Europe.

Today, the carpet is not just a piece of furniture, but an icon of style and a symbol of culture. Contemporary designs reinterpret ancient manufacturing techniques and traditional motifs in a modern way, resulting in unique, customised creations that fit into any environment, from the most classic to the most modern.

How to make interior design unique with an art carpet

Rug art can be used to create artefacts that add a touch of exclusivity and originality to the spaces in which they are placed, whether in a domestic or professional context.

Artistic carpets, whether antique or contemporary, are not mere pieces of furniture, but genuine works of art , distinguished by their strong decorative capacity and aesthetic refinement.

What makes art carpets particularly interesting is their versatility. Since they are high-quality products that are available in an infinite number of designs, they can be perfectly adapted to very different furnishing styles. Simply adding an art rug can make a space special, whether it is classically or modernly furnished, or features minimal, industrial or boho-chic décor.

When we speak of carpet art, we also mean that the craftsmanship ensures that each artefact is unique, i.e. made from selected materials and decorated with a precise set of patterns and colours.

But art carpets are not limited to decorating floors. Increasingly, they are also used to embellish walls, creating original and striking compositions. This versatility makes them extremely ductile pieces of furniture, which lend themselves to truly unexpected uses. Whether you decide to place them on the floor or on the wall, art carpets can transform any space into a fascinating and cosy place where art meets everyday life.

How to assess the quality of an art carpet?

In short, rug art is a unique expression of creativity and craftsmanship that has been handed down for centuries. What makes each artefact an extraordinary piece is the combination of factors that determine its quality and originality.

Firstly, the value of a carpet is closely linked to its craftsmanship. By hand, knot after knot, a work of art is created that bears the unmistakable imprint of the craftsman. The quality of the materials used, from wool of the best selection to the finest silk, and the complexity of the workmanship are fundamental elements in assessing the excellence of a carpet. For hand-knotted carpets, the number of knots per square metre is a parameter that indicates the fineness of the weaving and, consequently, the value of the artefact.

The craftsmanship also offers endless creative possibilities, allowing for new and original designs. From the strictest geometries to the most elaborate floral motifs, each piece is a visual tale rooted in cultures and traditions thousands of years old. The end result depends on many factors, such as the size, thickness and texture of the individual piece, which together create a harmony of shapes and colours.

To achieve an excellent result, it is essential to choose an art carpet that meets your specific needs. A quality carpet is not just a decorative element, but an investment that enriches the home and defines its style. The rug art may appear complex or even complicated to the uninitiated, but with the guidance of an expert with years of experience, you will undoubtedly always be able to make the ideal choice for your specific decorating needs.
